North Shropshire has historic links with the USA. Harold Macmillan appointed the former MP for Oswestry, David Ormsby-Gore, as the 36th British Ambassador to the USA in 1961 at the personal request of John F Kennedy, who had been a close friend of my predecessor at Oxford.

Dual the A5 campaign: Join the Shropshire Star's fight

Since 1991, there have been more than 1,785 casualties on the A5 north of Shrewsbury up to the Welsh border at Chirk. At the last count, 1,407 of these were slight, 320 were serious and 58 were fatal. Sadly, the latest figures may be worse as they will be updated at the end of September.

The Ivory Trade & Wildlife Crime

Elephants are killed for their ivory and the world loses an elephant every 15 minutes. The latest Great Elephant Census in 2016, estimates that the population of savanna elephants is down 30 per cent. 144,000 elephants have been killed since the last census in 2009.

European Union (Withdrawal) Bill 2017-19

The referendum was very clear when 17.4 million people voted for Brexit, the largest vote for anything in British history. The people voted to ensure democratically elected politicians take back control of our laws, our borders and our money.

Oswestry Show

Last weekend, I attended the 132nd Oswestry Show at the Park Hall Showground. With attendance estimated at 15,000 the Show is a great exhibition of North Shropshire’s agricultural industry and farming community.

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital

Last Friday, it was a real honour to attend the opening of the new state-of-the-art theatre and oncology building at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital by HRH Princess Alexandra.

Road and Rail Campaigns

Late last month, I had a meeting with officials from the Department for Transport in London. I had previously met the Transport Minister, John Hayes, in Parliament to discuss pressing transport and infrastructure projects in North Shropshire, which I campaigned for during the election in June.
