Further to his comments on 31st January following the meeting of Shropshire MPs and Councillors with Minister of State for Schools and learners, Jim Knight, Owen Paterson said that “I am delighted that, in a written statement to the House of Commons, the Minister confirmed that the Schools grant will be reviewed as agreed in our meeting. He has also written to every English local authority listing schools where there is a clear presumption against closing them. Every school on Shropshire County Councils list for consultation on closure is named by the Minister.
Last week was a tremendous week for people power in Shropshire. We have stopped school closures. We have secured an offer of help from the Government both in the long term on the formula and in the short term on the various avenues of funding open to the County Council. We have a black and white statement from the Government listing the schools that the Minister does not want closed.” Owen invites schools to write to him if they think that they qualify for one of the four funding streams.
