Owen Visits Oswestry’s Barnes and Mullins

Small Business Saturday

Owen Paterson, MP, visits Oswestry’s Barnes and Mullins

Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday has crossed the pond.  However, unlike Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday asks customers to simply shop at their local independent shops; no queuing, arguing or worse!

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) sees Small Business Saturday as much more than retailing.  Small businesses, collectively, employ 13.7 million people across the UK with many small businesses working in a global market.  FSB invited Owen Paterson, MP for North Shropshire, to meet Oswestry based businessman, Bruce Perrins, the joint Managing Director of Barnes and Mullins, a company voted the UK’s  best supplier of musical instruments in consecutive years since 2009!

Established in 1895, Barnes and Mullins is one of Shropshire’s longest standing businesses.  Today Bruce Perrin heads a team which supplies retailers of musical instruments throughout the UK and Europe with guitars, violins, cellos and much more.

Following a tour of the premises and show rooms, Bruce took the opportunity to talk to his MP, Owen Paterson, about business rates and the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) regulations.

Owen Paterson listened to what Bruce had to say, making notes along the way.  He was obviously impressed with the set up at Barnes and Mullins, saying: “This is a truly remarkable company, I congratulate you, wholeheartedly, on your success and wish you an equally prosperous 2015.”

Small Business Saturday is this Saturday, 6th December, but small businesses work hard throughout the year, employing local people, investing in their training, occupying commercial premises and generally adding to the business community and all it stands for.

FSB Shropshire’s Lindsey Barton, who joined Owen and Bruce, told Shropshire Star: “As a small business owner I know how difficult it is to keep all of the plates spinning at the same time.  Any small business owner needs to be a specialist in many areas: health and safety, human resources, tax and VAT and a plethora of other regulatory areas.  Bruce Perrin is doing a marvellous job; he has identified several different buyer types and caters to their needs, bringing the small business attention to detail and good service every time they buy from him.”
