Oswestry Town Council this week helped organise the launch reception for LYLM 2014 on the Terrace at the House of Commons on behalf of the National Association of British Market Authorities. The Town Council has a contract with the Association in terms of its activities, events and management.
LYLM is a celebration of our British Markets over a fortnight in May. LYLM is also about entrepreneurship and helping people start a new business. The campaign aims to encourage people to get behind their markets by highlighting their importance to the local economy and community.
Love Your Local Market has become the biggest markets event in the UK. Last year it involved 700 markets and enabled around 3000 people to try market trading for the first time. The organisers are hoping to achieve even greater success this year
LYLM has also gone international in 2014 to demonstrate the ability of markets across Europe to work together and to show the importance of markets to local communities in many different places. It will also show the vital contribution made by markets to boosting local business and culture.
Signatories of the Memorandum included European partners from Holland, France, Italy and Spain who are already working to promote retail and wholesale markets with the intention of beneficially supporting the growth and development of small and medium sized businesses.
Chairman of the Oswestry Town Council’s Markets Committee Councillor Mrs Cynthia Hawksley said “We were delighted that our member of Parliament was able to attend to support this important initiative that is endorsed by Government. Owen has always been a great supporter of Oswestry markets”
