108 Corbet Pupils Visit Westminster

Owen was delighted to meet pupils of the Corbet School, Baschurch following their tour of the Palace of Westminster today. 108 Year 10 pupils and 8 teachers boarded 3 coaches and made their way to London in dismal weather. The group’s tour took in the chambers of the House of Commons and House of Lords as well as Westminster Hall, the only major part of the Palace which survives in its original form, built from 1097-99. Owen reserved Committee Room 10 for a discussion afterward. This covered many local issues which covered education funding, the dairy industry, local energy production, prison conditions and recycling. International issues raised were the situation in Zimbabwe as well as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Owen Paterson said “I was pleased to see such interest from the pupils who attended and hope that they enjoyed their visit. I would encourage all schools in North Shropshire to organise a trip to the House of Commons and would be delighted to welcome them. It was a gutsy effort by the Corbet School to send over 100 pupils to London in the middle of January. I look forward to many more successful visits.”
