Thank you to those who have contacted me about the welfare of farm animals.
I would like to start by assuring you that I regard good animal welfare as an essential part of farming. Ministers are examining the evidence around the use of cages for farm animals and are considering the options.
They have also committed to continuing the UK’s focus on world-leading farm animal welfare standards through regulatory requirements and statutory codes.
As a part of this, ministers have said that they aim to ensure farrowing crates are no longer used for sows and for any new system to protect the welfare of the sow and piglets.
The UK is already ahead of most pig producing countries in terms of non-confinement farrowing, with around 40 per cent of our pigs housed outside and not farrowed with crates.
It is important that we continue to make progress.
